Pediatric functional lab testing · Gut, immune, inflammation, more

Targeted testing for chronic pediatric symptoms.

Standard screening bloodwork can be reassuring and still leave questions open. We use conventional bloodwork, functional testing, and specialty testing selectively to look for the drivers of chronic pediatric symptoms.

Why testing matters.

Parents often arrive with two kinds of frustration. Either the workup stopped at basic bloodwork, or they have a pile of results that still needs to be connected to their child. Functional lab testing is useful only when it answers a specific clinical question and leads to a clearer plan.

We choose testing around the child. More data rarely helps in the absence of a clinical question. The right test is the one that helps answer the next question.

Common tests we use.

Gut + microbiome Varies

Comprehensive stool testing

Used when gut symptoms, skin flares, food reactions, immune patterns, or behavior changes point back to the microbiome.

Common tests

  • GI Map
  • Tiny Health Pro
  • Vibrant Gut Zoomer
Ask about stool testing
Food triggers Varies

Food sensitivity testing

Used when delayed food-trigger patterns may be driving gut, skin, headache, mood, or inflammatory symptoms.

Common tests

  • KBMO
  • Other panels when clinically appropriate
Ask if this fits
Metabolic clues Varies

Organic acids testing

Used when the history points to nutrient patterns, yeast byproducts, metabolic stress, or mitochondrial clues.

Common tests

  • Organic acids panels
  • Follow-up markers as needed
Ask if this fits
Mold + toxins Varies

Environmental toxin and biotoxin testing

Used when mold exposure, water damage, toxin load, or biotoxin patterns may be part of the child's story.

Common tests

  • Mosaic Diagnostics
  • Vibrant
  • Real Time Lab
Ask if this fits
Tick-borne Varies

Lyme and tick-borne testing

Used when exposure history, symptoms, and timeline point toward Lyme disease or tick-borne co-infections.

Common tests

  • Vibrant
  • IGeneX
  • Comprehensive tick-borne panels
Ask if this fits
Gas + bloating Varies

SIBO breath testing

Used when bloating, gas, reflux, constipation, diarrhea, or abdominal pain suggest small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

Common tests

  • Genova
  • Other breath testing options when appropriate
Ask if this fits
Bloodwork Varies

Comprehensive bloodwork

Used when standard markers, nutrient markers, metabolic clues, or inflammation markers can help guide care.

Common tests

  • Local draw sites such as Labcorp or Quest
  • Iron, vitamin D, thyroid, metabolic, and inflammatory markers
Ask if this fits
Immune focus Varies

Immune and inflammatory markers

Used for a deeper focused dive in children who present with PANS/PANDAS symptoms or chronic inflammatory patterns.

Common tests

  • Immune markers when appropriate
  • Inflammatory markers
  • Infection clues when the history fits

Exact pricing can change by lab, insurance rules, provider pricing, and the specific panel. We explain the expected cost before you order.

How testing works in our practice.

Every test we order should have a clinical reason. Trendy or available panels only belong when they answer the next clinical question.

The first consult or intake determines what testing makes sense for your child. Sometimes that means a GI Map. Sometimes it means conventional bloodwork, reviewing existing labs first, or involving another specialist.

How lab fees work.

Lab fees depend on the test and ordering route. Most of the time, Calm Wellness Center can access special provider pricing and pass that discount along to your family when we collect payment for the lab. Sometimes that is not possible, and you will pay the outside lab directly.

We make the expected out-of-pocket cost clear before testing is ordered. We will also explain which fees are paid to Calm Wellness, which are paid to an outside lab, and when a package already includes a specific test.

That clarity matters. Functional medicine families are already paying out of pocket, and you should understand what is being recommended and why before you order testing.

What testing can show.

Testing can show patterns: dysbiosis, inflammation, yeast, nutrient clues, immune activation, mold exposure signals, food-trigger patterns, or infection clues.

Clinical judgment still matters. A lab result rarely tells the whole story by itself. The interpretation matters: symptoms, timeline, medication history, diet, sleep, environment, school stress, family history, and what has already been tried.

Insurance, HSA, and FSA.

Insurance coverage for functional and specialty labs is often limited. Some families receive partial reimbursement depending on their plan and the lab. Many tests are HSA/FSA eligible. We provide superbills when appropriate; families pay outside labs or Calm Wellness directly depending on the test.

How to start.

Start with the free consult and tell us what is happening. If testing makes sense, we will recommend the right starting point. If you already have labs, bring them to the intake so we can interpret them in context before deciding what belongs next.
