Three boys. Lyme, mold, Hashimoto's, severe allergies, learning issues. Specialists who shrugged. Over $100,000 of our own money before they got well. I'm Kim, and Calm Wellness exists so other parents can walk this road with a clinical guide.
Kim has been working with children since she was 13 and in medical settings with children since age 16. Her clinical background includes Pediatric ICU, pediatric orthopedics, general pediatrics, pediatric urology specializing in bladder dysfunction, constipation and biofeedback, CALM Wellness in New York, school nursing, and Primary Care Integrative PNP work at Restorative Wellness Center in Exton, PA.
My journey started long before I had children. I spent my entire childhood dealing with debilitating migraines and what every doctor told my mother was "something autoimmune, it'll come out as she gets older." Besides all the traditional specialists, my mother brought me to see all different types of natural healers and to pursue different holistic treatments. Nothing seemed to work. I kept on trudging through life for the next few decades trying all different supplements and treatments.
As time passed, I became a nurse and a mother. What I learned quickly was how sensitive my children were to food and the environment, just like their momma. My oldest developed asthma, seemingly out of nowhere. I ended up in the hospital with a severe infection. My husband was covered in a horrible "unknown" rash. My middle son had weird illnesses with very high fevers. My youngest developed many severe, anaphylactic allergies to both food and outdoor allergens. On top of all that, all three of my boys had significant learning and processing issues. Time was up.
That is when I started taking even more courses and certifications to see how I could help my family. I thought it would be cheaper than continuing to see providers who couldn't help us, and I love puzzles. What I didn't realize was how instrumental the next decade would be in my family's health journey.
Long story short, we were all suffering from different chronic infections, mostly triggered by strep but also EBV and Lyme, and we all had extensive mold exposure from infancy. One of my children was diagnosed with subclinical hypothyroid, which was later uncovered to be the autoimmune form, Hashimoto's. I began to understand that my family needed a more complete clinical map, even with some more natural supports and a cleaner diet. We were spending thousands of dollars without really knowing what each one of us needed.
Within several weeks of treating my youngest for Lyme, he began reading out of nowhere. He told me he didn't have "the creepies" anymore. That was the moment I realized children often struggle to explain what they are feeling. How could my child, the one I spend every day with, feel something so terrible and I had no idea?
Within a year, his amplified pain syndrome was under control, he was off almost all pharmaceuticals including his inhaler, he no longer had bone infections, and he could be outside without worrying about having his epipen near by. He was finally being a kid again, without anxiety, worry, or pain.
That is when I knew I had to do this for other families. I built Calm Wellness so other parents could get a clearer path sooner. My promise: I will see your child as a whole person. I will look at them, and you, as individuals. I stayed with my family's hard case. I will stay with yours.
